Love your story. I too ran into Qbasic as a teenager in the early 90s and ended up studying CS and then programming for a living. Actually the programming is for hire at the moment as I want to spend any amount of time I can get away from computers, but it comes in waves and before you know it I find myself tinkering with programming languages in my spare time. Do you ever think what would it be like for you if you decided to go to med school instead of CS?
- kstrauser 4y agoI love what I do. A good day is one where I get to write lots of code. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. I’ve thought about that. There were so many “what ifs”, you know? At one point I’d been accepted to the US Naval Academy, and I have a hard time imagining how that would have turned out. If it ever gets to the point that someone’s letting me drive a ship, things have gone very wrong in the world. And maybe I might’ve made a good doctor. Who knows? But I was never as driven to do that as I’ve been compelled to learn a language, or write a hobby project to solve some problem, or do the annual Advent of Code, etc. All said, I wouldn’t change a thing.
