I once worked on a home built browser grpc implementation where the protobufs were serialized over the wire in base64. It certainly had it's kinks to work out, but sharing/generating the service definitions and models from the same protobuf markup between backend and frontend was really nice.
- nine_k 4y agoDoesn't OpenAPI (née Swagger) give you the same for plain HTTP + JSON?
- AtNightWeCode 4y agoYes, you can even generate models from JSON directly. Then there is JSON Schema and other schema first options that mostly no one uses anymore.
- 89vision 4y agoyeah, I've done both, but I far prefer writing protobuf markup than swagger. YMMV
- miohtama 4y agoI was working with Cosmos nodes in a hackathon and they did RPC where one had Protobufs embedded as base64 encoded within JSON.
