Politicians seeking re-election use said money to create new programs instead and effectively "buy votes" with your own money. Can you provide an example of this ever working? I can give you several of it being an absolute failure and having no impact. In Canada we have "sin" taxes (Alcohol, cigarettes, gasoline). - Smoking has declined, but more because of the negative marketing (ugly pictures on a pack of smokes).
