AMD follows Intel in warning that the PC market is falling apart
- erulabs 4y agoThe group with disposable income and a penchant for building PCs probably now has kids and a mortgage. Games for younger kids are extremely mobile friendly and don’t require any custom built gaming PC. I fear for our hermetically sealed computing future. I worry the “tech skill shortage” will only worsen into a protected elite class of university trained folks that it was originally. Us dropout founders thought we were the future - but we were just a gap in the leviathans armor. The P in PC is at risk of being lost forever. Heck - social media in the cloud might as well be a Social Computer already. Anyways - still bullish on AMD. Consumer will die - enterprise will flourish.
- shadowofneptune 4y agoNot sure it's just desktops. Laptops are probably reaching the point desktops did 10 years ago: current models are capable enough that only the small number of power users see a need to upgrade. EDIT: Just remembered also that sales boomed two years ago due to the sudden need to have a voice conferencing computer. People did their upgrade cycle early.
- Auracle 4y agoI would think laptops get replaced often because they’re more likely to get damaged, the battery will go bad, and I’m sure the average user never cleans the dust out.
- antifa 4y agoI think laptops need another decade to catchup with the thin/quiet/coolness of the M1.
- MacsHeadroom 4y agoI have had the thin quite coolness of an M1 with the ThinkPad X1 series for an entire decade now. I briefly tried the highest spec MacBook Air, but it was incredibly underpowered compared to my older X1's i7 + 32GB of ram in an equally slim, sleek and quite form factor.
- colinmhayes 4y agoYou don’t think there are new 22 year olds to replace the old ones?
- erulabs 4y agoOf course there are! But tech is now sealed with screws for which the screwdrivers are not sold! When I was 22 I worked on old BMWs - today that old bmw is mostly driven by computers for which the code is not available. See the installation steps of Command Keen for DOS versus Fortnite for iPAD for another example. My point is pc enthusiasts is another entrypoint into tech that is becoming esoteric or hermetically sealed. Anyways the PC market is much bigger than just the enthusiast market (by a lot) - so AMD will be fine!
- kwere 4y agoframe.work is a company that is building personalizable laptops, and a lot of new "custom" options are coming to market.
- ekianjo 4y ago"falling apart" seems like a clickbait headline compared to the actual content. As usual.
- jdhn 4y ago>AMD forecast third quarter gross profit margin at 54%, slightly below estimates for 54.2%. >AMD's warning comes after rival Intel Intel previously told investors it expects the total addressable market for PCs this year to plunge 10% amid a shocking second quarter earnings miss and full year cut to earnings guidance. It seems to me that sales are reverting to a pre-pandemic state, which isn't the end of the world?
- d_tr 4y agoWho would click the link if the title was "People bought a shitload of computers during the lockdowns and now they do not need a lot of them"? I surely wouldn't...
- ChildOfChaos 4y agoSeems to be how the market runs though. The market doesn't care about common sense. If a strange event happens that then gives a massive upturn in a companies sales/profits then after a few years things return back to normal so therefore the companies sales/profits drop, all the finance bro's panic and think the company is in some kinda massive decline and must do something to continue endless growth.
- dragontamer 4y agoGood prices ahead for custom PC builders!!
