Because lots of legitimate callers to me are located in the US, calling from a cell phone or landline, and I don't have them in my contacts.
For instance, contractors coming to do work on the house may be calling from any number of cell phones, or people buying things from Craigslist. For Craigslist, if I were to filter out all the non-US originating calls and texts, would probably result in all the spam being dropped and at no expense to legitimate buyers.
- NavinF 4y agoThose are all VoIP callers. Few businesses have enough copper phone wires for everyone in the building.
- dymk 4y agoThey’re not VoIP callers. I’m primarily dealing with small to medium sized businesses, which use landlines, or cell plans like Verizon for Small Business, which are basically normal lines on normal cellphones.
- thfuran 4y agoA ton of small and medium businesses use voip. Even residential landline phone service can be voip these days.
- dymk 4y agoTo reiterate the problem: Legitimate callers don't all use VoIP. I don't have every legitimate caller's phone number in my contact list. Blocking all numbers not in one's contacts list is therefore not a solution to blocking spam calls while allowing legitimate callers.
- thfuran 4y agoYes, but many legitimate callers are voip so blocking all voip calls also isn't a good solution if you're looking to avoid blocking legitimate callers.
- hn_version_0023 4y agoSeems like maybe a good business would be listing peoples known numbers and making a caller ID app that it outside the carriers’ control that relies on … I dunno a web of trust and crowdsourced data and reputation?
- dymk 4y agoThe problem still is with number spoofing, and STIR/SHAKEN seems to not be sufficiently rolled out and enforced https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/STIR/SHAKEN https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/STIR/SHAKEN Many of the spam calls I receive come from my own area code, with the number spoofed.
