1. timezones are a PITA. Collabroation with Europe/East-Asia is barely manageable from the West Coast. India is the most painful. 2. english language barriers - half the people I have worked with in South America (Colombia, Brazil) and China were so bad with English that it seriously affected the team's productivity. Canadians fit the bill on both counts - same timezones and language.
