I've ridden with the Shimano Alfine 11 speed internally geared hub and it is surprisingly fragile. The thing has trouble with certain gears due to problems with torque limits. From what I've heard, the Rohloff is bomb proof. I mostly went with the Alfine because I wanted the electronic shifting. Now with the E-14 out I'm experiencing a good deal of buyer's remorse for not going with the Rohloff.
