It would be cliche to say that this is one of the lowest quality and the least inconsequential verbiage of words put together. Just read the abstract and the conclusion to see that there is nothing but bla-bla catch all phrases with no actual meaning (apart from cultural myths institutionalized into rhetoric). The conclusion is to "think" harder about possible societal collapse pathways. Sure enough looking up the past publication of L. Kemp indicates that has been building a career on top of this heap of non-sense -- and that this gets published in a scientific journal at all is indication of how low the standard are. The very concept this author is trying wrap in jargon and AE (academic english) is not to illuminate but to hide and obscure of what it means to have, to be, a civilization.
I challenge Mr. Kemp to write a paper about where wealth comes from, and what institutional policies promote which incentives showing past and present efforts in trying incorporate pollution into the price metric. Review the failed economic and environmental policies (under diverse ideological paradigms) which lead to larger damage to people and environments with none-of-the-envisioned-benefits so that we can learn from past (systemic) mistakes. Such paper, Mr. Kemp, I will post on my wall to study, not this pile of garbage.
