This is a tough topic, in the same way that it’s hard for non-technical founders to make their first technical hire. How do you hire a CFO if you don’t even know what a CFO does day to day? Your board will likely be of help, but it’s ultimately your decision and you will earn the lumps from a bad decision. I’d argue that it’s very hard to hire C-level executives outside of your core competency. Not that it’s inherently hard to hire at the C-level, but because it’s very hard to hire for skills you don’t have, can’t understand and can’t select for.
