An interop idea that could help to demonopolize Amazon
- theamk 4y agoI think this approach significantly overestimates the technical powers of small stores. There are ways to search for "amazon + local retailers" -- for example Google Shopping. Google even has a special "available nearby" button specifically for offline stores! There is a clear benefit to small stores to participate in it, but still very few do. Mega-chains like Staples and Home Depot will show up, but local hardware or bicycle stores most likely won't. So if they are ignoring Google, with millions of searches per day, what are the chances they won't ignore some little-known browser plugin? I say pretty low. (This also brings to the other point in the article: "use of Amazon isn't a mark of your "laziness" anymore" -- if Amazon is your first stop, it absolutely is. In the past, one would use reusable shopping bags to reduce plastic waste. And now, everyone should search on google, home depot, walmart before jumping to amazon, it's simple and makes a difference if enough people do this)
