How Many Nuclear Missiles Can the United States Intercept?
- killingtime74 4y agoThis is a moot point. The moment any significant quantity of nuclear missiles are launched it’s the end of the world as we know it due to nuclear winter
- willis936 4y agoThis has been treated as a foregone conclusion and upon closer inspection is more myth than fact. At the most generous: the concept of prolonged nuclear winter really stretches atmospheric climate models.
- killingtime74 4y agoIn any case the fallout will probably kill most of what survives
- willis936 4y agoNo. The recent FEMA guide on response to nuclear weapons gives a good idea of the consequences. If all nukes that Russia and the US have were detonated on cities then there would still be quite a bit of habitable land in both. There would be a global famine and economic contraction that would lead to untold suffering and wars. Society would slip backwards for the first time in hundreds of years. It is really quite unlikely that it would be the end of history.
- pasabagi 4y agoCalling it 'myth' is definitely overselling the case. It was the scientific consensus in from 80's on. With the rapid advance of climate science, new data, etc, it might be possible to challenge that consensus. I don't think a couple of articles are sufficient, though - it's still essentially a minority opinion that nuclear war would not result in nuclear winter.
- bamboozled 4y agoHumans are really stupid, climate change and nuclear war, great inventions...
