Its 2022 man. Dont read anything about corporations from boomers. They are from a time where complexity was within our control. Today it is mostly definitely not. Corporations are machines. Corporate leaders are not producing "team work and trust" anywhere, because the machine has gotten sophisticated enough that it doesn't need it.
The best machines have great metrics. And exponentially higher costs when they fuck up. That manifests in CEO pay cuz that the main role of the CEO today. To be a sacrificial part so that the rest of the machine doesn't blow up when things go side ways. Think of it as a high voltage fuse that takes a hit to prevent the everyone in town from getting fried. Things are so complex, it does not matter what comes out of the head of one 6 inch chimp brain at the top.
Imho the real issue is not about CEO pay. The issue is what should be done when the chimps build machines that they have no control over? Who care what CEO of Jurassic Park gets paid if we know how the story ends.
