  Also worth noting that double or triple glazing costs a fortune as well. Retrofitting insulation is often not a simple option with American homes, I think, also. America is generally not that nice a place to be poor.

  I live so far out in the woods, I'd have to walk a half mile to get a neighbor into rifle range. It is never silent here. There's a few mis-timed cicada up this summer, which makes it louder than usual; but the crickets, the frogs, the whole panoply of the chorus of life is in full swing all the time. None of those critters care about economic or social status.
