Nichelle Nichols, trailblazing 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89
- rmason 4y agoNichelle Nichols had decided to leave Star Trek after the first season. Her mind was made up. Then at an LA charity event she had a chance meeting with Martin Luther King who convinced her to stay. If she had left there would have been no Kirk/Uhura kiss. As a teenager when that show aired it was a very big deal, the first interracial kiss on American TV. I know some Southern stations said they wouldn't air that episode but I don't remember if they did. Of course without Lucille Ball there would have been no Star Trek at all.
