> in reality, Asians have the largest income gap with one of the highest poverty rates
The Asian poverty rate has been virtually the same as the white one since 23 years ago [1], and is currently the lowest of all racial groups, by a slim margin [2].
> Then in January, brutal hate crimes occurred across the U.S., specifically targeting the Asian elderly, including Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old Thai man, who died from being shoved. [..] [My old neighbor] wanted an easy outlet for his rage. It was about exhibiting dominance in a society that rewards whiteness.
For all the blame the author puts on "whiteness", they fail to mention that Ratanapakdee was killed by a Black man [3]. And if we look beyond the very malleable category of "hate crime" (which includes crimes against society and property... weren't we recently told it's illegitimate to care about property crimes?) and focus on something objective, namely homicide [4], we see that in 2019 (the latest year for which I was able to find this data), of the 247 homicides perpetrated against the "other race" [5] group, 138 were perpetrated by other members of the "other race" group, leaving 109 inter-racial homicides. Of these, 39 were by non-Hispanic whites (57 by "whites" including Hispanics, minus 18 by Hispanics, that are nearly always classified as white), and 40 by blacks.
Meaning non-Hispanic whites, who are 62% of the non-other races of the US committed 36% of the inter-racial homicides against Asians, while Blacks, who are 13%, committed 37%.
Yet I am not surprised the author puts all the blame on "whiteness", and none on anyone else.

[5] "Includes American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander", meaning of all Americans classified as "other", 81% are Asian. That does not necessarily mean 81% of the homicide victims are Asian, but it is the best I can do with the available data.

- bilbo0s 4y agoMeaning non-Hispanic whites, who are 62% of the non-other races of the US committed 36% of the inter-racial homicides against Asians, while Blacks, who are 13%, committed 37%. And to be honest, even all of your numbers completely ignore the elephant in the room. ie - the fact that the group committing the largest number of homicides against asians are, well, asians. Simple facts like that are ignored by people pushing racial statistics in one direction or another because it doesn't line up with their world views. People seem almost fearful to admit that it's actually whites who kill whites, blacks who kill blacks, asians who kill asians, hispanics who kill hispanics, native americans who kill native americans, and so on. The implications of these inconvenient facts seem too devastating to the current societal psychology to allow those facts to be broadcast too widely. Much easier on our psychology to blame whites, or blacks, or hispanics, or anyone really, other than intra-racial violence. I realize the article is not strictly about homicide, but since your comment brought forth the issue I thought now would be as good a time as any to bring up the elephant in the room. And that elephant is the fact that, if we want to fear, well, we all have far more to "fear" from what are supposedly "our own", than we have to "fear" from "the other".
- kmonsen 4y agoI wonder if there is some nuance to this. I think most people are killed by someone they know, which I guess is most likely to be by your own race. So of the people killed by strangers maybe the statistics are different?
