You are mistaken. Pensions typically pay out at a fixed rate until you die, and even then your spouse can continue collecting until they also die.

  What does that have to do with who’s paying for it? It’s like an insurance, you put money into it and then depending on circumstances get money out. It’s not a handout and not granting it would be theft.
