In a market badly out of kilter, many older residents are stuck in their homes
- zaptheimpaler 4y ago"... is an empty nester living alone in a four-bedroom Colonial in Shrewsbury. “I want to downsize but it doesn’t make economic sense,” he said." it sucks for the owners who expected their houses to maintain/grow value forever. but any investment that can go up 10-20x in value can also go down just as much as anyone holding stocks recently knows.. we have just shielded housing from that for decades for some reason. but this is what affordable housing means. prices have to come down..
- quantified 4y agoThe nice thing about owning the home instead of renting is that they have the home. It's not an investment, it's a place to live. These homes are enormously more valuable than when they were purchased, they were a great financial investment if maintained. If the small places elsewhere are relatively more expensive, well, that's always a risk. Someone over there is complaining they can't afford it either. Maybe these homeowners would have won the lottery if other people were fleeing to their places.
