It was a polite way to say it was technically stealing. Sometimes people return these bikes, but if the destination is a bar, it includes some alcohol and in the morning you don't remember how the night started, it is a good precaution to get rid of the bike and anything linking it to you. I don't support any such behavior and the guys that I know don't do it, just reporting it.
