Nationwide Veterinarian Shortage Has Bay Area Pet Owners Scrambling
- NoRagrets 4y agoSome thoughts: 1. It is certainly the pandemic effect. But there is more. 2. The cost of vet education is too high and pay is garbage unless you have equity in practice. Which isn’t cheap. 3. American recipe for disaster seems to now include education for essential sectors being de-prioritized. 4. There are no vocational schools and vet care can certainly be a vocational degree and no need to be something that bears the burden of 300k student loans. 5. Typically vets were educated for the rural sector. In urban areas, the care is entirely diff: mostly domesticated pets and exotic pets. There is of course, wild life care. They are all entirely..pardon the pun..different animals. 6. There is no regulation over animal breeding, puppy mills and dog fighting etc. Most states are particular about collecting fees for pet licenses and mandatory vaccines. Most state run pounds are for lost/found, capture/euthanizing unwanted abandoned pets, and sometimes under the sanitation dept(cleaning up roadkill). When pet ownership is such a huge revenue maker(Petfood, etc), why arent the states doing the needful?
