After 9 years, finally Web MIDI is ready on Firefox. With that joy is mixed a sadness about the design decision. I've been following the discussions and developments on Bugzilla eagerly, and suddenly right before the release it's announced that the feature will be behind a gate: it will require both developers and users to go through a bunch of hoops to prompt/install an additional browser add-on for "Site Permissions" to enable Web MIDI. This is too much friction, and will prevent wide adoption. At least I can use the feature for myself on localhost, but it does not seem practical for production/commercial work.
