The press release is a bit difficult to place into historical context. I believe that the first AlphaFold release was mostly human and mouse proteins, and this press release marks the release of structures for additional species.

The press release actually contains an infographic comparing the amount of published protein models for different clades of organisms. The infographic shows that the previous release (~1mln proteins) contained proteins of some animal, plant, bacterial, and fungal species.
