- blueflow 4y agoI'm still laughing my ass off that the support letter got more signatures. https://rms-support-letter.github.io/ https://rms-support-letter.github.io/ You and other US people are not representative of FOSS.
- robert_foss 4y agoI'm not American in any way, not that it should matter. But I am an active maintainer of several open source projects.
- blueflow 4y agoI used to contribute to FOSS, but i left because of a specific kind of people. Some people that have visions about making FOSS better, but are uncompromising and unagreeable on their methods. And are not afraid of shaming people they disagree with. Imagine my face when i saw that all (not exaggerating, ALL of them) FOSS contributors who harassed me out also signed the RMS removal letter. I think the public shaming and witch hunt thing is some kind of kink of them and they are doing much more harm to FOSS then RMS ever will. This is why i signed the support letter and donated to the FSF. Seeing these peoples reaction to RMS being reinstated instilled warmth and Schadenfreude into my heart.
- robert_foss 4y agoI'm genuinely sorry you had a bad time. People of every background feeling welcome and being able to contribute is what it is all about. RMS being reinstated was simply not a smart move, I think it does great harm to FSF. For example, when FSFE reached out to me they explicitly mentioned distancing themselves from FSF due to Stallman.
- blueflow 4y ago> People of every background feeling welcome and being able to contribute is what it is all about. This is repeated all over and over again, but this isn't more than a hollow phrase if the community is not able to handle conflicts without drama and witch hunts. Even the best code of conduct is not able to make up for a lack of social skills. And showing off your inclusiveness is still... showing off. It will only impress other self-promoters. The FSFE is not representative of FOSS, either. I'm dissatisfied with the general situation, but i'm not able to change it, either.
- e2le 4y agoI've always wondered why the mattress incident was used as an example of his misdeeds, why do people see it as an issue?
- belorn 4y agoA lot of people, me including, do not see political views as harassment. I also ascribe to the principles of the European Convention on Human Rights that gives every person the right to hold and express political views without being harassed for it, regardless if I agree or disagree with those political views. RMS has/had a bunch of views about the definition of the word rape. I would start any such global discussion by adding a few more languages, like Swedish, German and Japanese for a bit more global context to such words and legal definitions. I personally really like the Swedish concept for "lesser rape", a concept totally alien to the US. The word "rape" here is both a word with a specific definition, a chapter in the law book, and a specific law all at the same time. Each has a total different definition depending on how it is being used.
