I actually think xi is looking to fight. It was always coming, China is only going to weaken from here population and gdp wise. If he doesn’t get into an endless war they will slowly lose power. It’s horrible for the nation but good for xi.
The motives of the CCP and China used to be well aligned. As that shifts expect more bellicose chest thumping.
- goatsneez 4y agoI cannot judge if xi is looking for fight. China, as any other nation, is facing real challenges and problems (including those you mention). However, I do not see a strong evidence that China has from now on only the loosing 'hand' with inevitable downward trend of development across entire spectrum of social and economic lifecyle. In addition, wealth is a relative metric, which means one would have to specify relative to what/who it will weaken. The world as of right now is in the state of flux of change, force-fields are shifting and every nation is positioning itself to benefit from the anticipated future situation. Certainly this is a self-referential issue since each country may influence the process itself. Therefore, I think 'chest thumping' is going to be the norm for a while (not only by CCP). History teaches us that conflicts (of any kind) are natural during such periods.

- mrcheesebreeze 4y agoAn alternative reason could be that they are in a great place right now. Despite the usa's promises, china's economic chokehold could theoretically let them invade with few repercussions. It would explain the slow but increasing escalations, as if they were testing the waters and making the west used to their prodding. Honestly I don't know if the usa could survive the economic hit of war with china, I doubt it would be worth it at all. Infact it would seem they would rather use nukes than loose it if they invade taiwan.
- alexnewman 4y agoI don’t understand why them providing manufacturing is Any sort of a chokehold. Perhaps you are referring to a different export?
- mrcheesebreeze 4y agoits because we inherently rely on them too much to produce products. If we fight them both us and them lose out on enough trade to do a lot of damage. they need our money, we need their stuff, we are shackled together.
- alexnewman 4y agoThose days are over my friend. We rely on them less and less and soon inputs will be rare.
