Old name was actually UC Hastings College of the Law.
New name is a definite clunker. UCSF College of the Law makes more sense. I don’t have a source for this, but my understanding was UC San Francisco, the famous medical school, wouldn’t allow their brand to be diluted.
When someone says “I went to law school at UC”, that always meant Berkeley, which has had its own name issues.
A Native American name would have been symbolically righteous, as well as interesting and distinctive. Huge missed opportunity.
- dieselgate 4y agoSome good points, my understanding of the history is “The UC” has always been Cal, Davis is the “agriculture branch”, LA is the “southern branch”, UCSF is the “medical branch” but things have changed and new campuses have been established. Not sure how Boalt mixes in with all that (when looking up the spelling just found out Cal Law doesn’t use that name anymore either!) Good thing I’m just a code monkey
- Kaibeezy 4y agoI’d thought Boalt was a very established name and was surprised when they backed away from it. Wonder what he did? Accessing… John Henry Boalt was instrumental in legitimizing anti-Chinese racism and in catalyzing support for passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 — the nation’s first immigration ban on a specific group of people solely on the basis of race or nationality. Yet, until 2017, his views weren’t well known on campus. https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/01/30/boalt-hall-denamed/ https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/01/30/boalt-hall-denamed/
