These results look fishy.
I don't have time to dig into everything, but I did read the relevant part of the PDF where the questions were. I don't know where the error is, but the variance in how whites answer alone would cause me to raise a big eyebrow. Let alone compared to the rest of the results.
I'm not saying the results are wrong, just that I don't buy them given the amount of time I've invested. I would devote more time to researching this if it were published somewhere I recognized, but there are only so many hours in a day.
Also, when it comes to racism in North America, "Asians" is not an appropriate racial group. I've yet to hear a single Canadian that was born after 1940 talk poorly about Japanese people, but there are plenty of other Asian subgroups that I've heard horrible things about. And as is almost always the case with surveys like this, Jews are often white, but suffer bigotry from white racists.
This topic and research around it is messy.
- PaulHoule 4y agoMany "asians" in the US complain about a "bamboo ceiling" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_ceiling https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_ceiling and every so often asians in the US report being physically attacked by people who refer to them with racial slurs during the attack. I've definitely overheard racist comments about the attractiveness and sexuality of asian males in white company. Something very similar was done for religious groups here: https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2017/02/15/americans-express-increasingly-warm-feelings-toward-religious-groups/ https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2017/02/15/americans-ex... I shouldn't say I'm "amused" by a finding because that sure got another comment of mine voted down, but it's an interesting observation (in the fourth table) that white evangelicals have a high opinion of Jewish people (compared to say, Catholics) but that Jewish people have a poor opinion of white evangelicals.
- Fatnino 4y agoThat's because evangelicals "like" Jews so there can be someone around to gloat "we told you so" when the second coming happens or whatever. Jews have picked up on this. Or just happen to be liberal.
- 3pt14159 4y agoI can't speak to your experience, the Korean and Japanese friends I've had have had a way, way better time than other Asian subgroups. The white people I know don't think of Asians like they think of white people. They break them down into subgroups. Chinese get some hate due to the whole political situation right now, but even that pales in comparison to what my Middle Eastern, Indian, and Pakistani friends go through. I'm not trying to argue anecdotes here. Quite the opposite. I'm trying to express my frustration in these social studies that don't model the complexity in the underlying realities of race relations so we can do a better job at ending racism.
- PaulHoule 4y agoIf you made finer grained distinctions you’d get better results. I don’t know about people resident in the US but I know that Chinese, Koreans and many other Asians feel coldly towards the Japanese because of WWII and a lack of atonement thereof. I know a Chinese person who talks to the effect that Japanese are perverts and Indians are losers. Some Asian groups seem to do well economically in the U.S. but some don’t, such as Cambodians. The same is true for other groups that appear on the U.S. census such as “hispanics”. Ever since that question got added to the census Democrats have thought “great we are going to win the next election because ‘Hispanics’ are going to vote for us” and then they find it didn’t happen for a few reasons, one of which is there is no such thing as a ‘hispanic’ person but rather there are Mexicans, Cubans, etc. and those groups have very different perspectives. Cubans in the u.s. are notoriously right wing in reaction to Castro for instance. Somehow the democrats don’t seem to remember what happened 4 years ago so they always get blindsided. That census question might be the worst thing that happened to the democrats since 1970.
