This sort of thing has apparently been a huge problem for pro wrestling fans. The WWE owns a massive back catalog of shows and pay-per-views from various wrestling companies over the years, and they have no problem with editing out music they no longer want to license, blurring or bleeping foul language or audience signs which weren't originally censored, completely removing entire segments, etc., such that even though they've made almost every program they've produced available to stream inexpensively, there's still a black market of trading old VHS rips and home video recordings of the same shows since they sometimes contain significant bits of content that are heavily-altered or completely missing from the streaming product.
Netflix isn't starting a dangerous trend; merely continuing one that's been quite prevalent in the home video industry.
