I feel that most comments here miss the spot: the problem is NOT about a "new corrected" edition... but about the REPLACEMENT of the "original edition" by a new one ! It's like rewriting history...
So, the problem is not really if it's something mundane or something really important, it's about controling our memories.
I have no problem to "update" some movies, only if the original movie is not available anymore. If you can "delete" old versions, what will "truth" mean along the way ?
To be more clear: how long since we will change "movies" (and history, and memories) to be conform to the taste of the day ? When you see an old movie, it can be "sexist" for example... but you can explain it wrt to the times when the movie was done. There's some "contextual" informations in every movies... and we may quickly lose this if we start editing
