Ask HN: What is the purpose of WASM outside the browser?
I was recently going through a blog that was explaining how to use WASMtime and use WASM outside the browser.
But what is wrong with docker or a regular VM?
- sinenomine 4y agoISA, OS independence. WASM runs in quite unusual environments, for example on some blockchains.
- sanskarjethi 4y agoPardon my ignorance, but what does ISA mean? > WASM runs in quite unusual environments Why not just use regular Rust/C++? For the isolated environment of execution?
- sinenomine 4y agoCompile once, run anywhere
- salawat 4y agoInstruction Set Architecture. That which defines the encoding of opcodes to actual functional units/instructions of an underlying machine. You've got a valid question. The answer is: Because you apparently have a WASM environment, and not a C++ or rust environment. There is no virtue to any one thing over another. It's all, what you have to work with at the time.
- whb07 4y agoLimited execution privileges. A random binary can do anything in your OS, whereas the spec of WASM doesn't allow it. ie. "run foo.exe with max 500mb ram and it can only exist/touch files in /bar"
