Judging from the developer samples it is starting to look quite different from open source Android.

  Very much so. All across the board. Notably in particular to me, there's a wide & growing set of distributed computing tools & libraries, DSoftBus[1] & others, for cross-device systems. Im a huge lover of Cast & OpenScreenProtocol, but these work bevause they are kinda lo-fi, simple, & I have awe respect & reverence for the attempts being made here. Good luck! Diving into really hard problem spaces, & giving potential app & devices makers a lot of rope.
