Ask HN: Do you keep learning new technical stuffs without any application

I have been learning a few technical topics mentioned in the threads or books by Hackernews. But there is any opportunity to use them in real world context. Am I wasting my time?

I learn the most by using the new technical concepts in a smallish project.
