Ask HN: Do you use a smart watch?
- billconan 4y agoI don't. I feel that not needing to wear anything is liberating. If I have to carry one thing, I choose a phone, as it is more functional.
- timonoko 4y agoI could use VNC-watch. Which does nothing but shows a copy your phone screen. Or some part of it. Or even better -- you could have full access of your phone, you could start apps and zoom in. And some apps could have special corner for VNC-watch viewing and the watch would automagically zoom to that area. Endless possibilities.
- yuppie_scum 4y agoThis would be like if your phone just mirrored your desktop and used the exact same interface (mouse clicking, keyboard, etc). It would be terrible. The good wearables (really just the Apple Watch from what I can tell - Pebble was great but Fitbit did a catch and kill on it) have a specific UX that makes great sense on a watch and present that information in a more condensed fashion. If you haven’t tried it, it really is a good experience.
- timonoko 4y agoExcept those special watch interfaces and apps have nothing to offer, that is why I do not use them. I decided now that I want truly generic VNC-watch, which can view any screen anywhere. You could show the corner of your laptop or smart-TV. Or view the screen of an oscilloscope, when some critical process needs watching. DroidVNC is good VNC-server for Android, so this watch would work with a phone too.
- yuppie_scum 4y agoI think I just told you what good watches offer - they are tailored to the hardware (inch wide screen with a crown and another button or two), vs a 6 inch screen. You can’t just handwave that away.
