  It had to happen soon or later. Firmware (and therefore hardware) is the absolute best place to put malware into: no way to detect it as it runs at higher privilege than everything else, including the operating system itself. That's the reason we should push for open firmware and hardware everywhere whenever we can: if hiding spyware into systems becomes technically trivial as updating a firmware image, I expect it to be abused pretty much everywhere.
