vi/less use / as search, which come to think about it probably get it from regular expressions (eg /pattern/)
- johncoltrane 4y agoex before vi, ed before ex, and QED before ed. Enclosing a pattern between slashes is a tradition that comes from QED that is not directly related to regular expressions: /<pattern>/ means "line that matches <pattern>".
