Ask HN: Why does “slash” is the icon for search?
On many websites (Google Search, GitHub), Command + "/" open the search bar. Anyone knows why?
- vhodges 4y agovi/less use / as search, which come to think about it probably get it from regular expressions (eg /pattern/)
- johncoltrane 4y agoex before vi, ed before ex, and QED before ed. Enclosing a pattern between slashes is a tradition that comes from QED that is not directly related to regular expressions: /<pattern>/ means "line that matches <pattern>".
