Chess robot breaks seven-year-old boy's finger during Moscow Open
- vlovich123 4y ago> "The robot broke the child's finger," Sergey Lazarev, Moscow Chess Federation President, told Tass news agency. "This is of course bad." Not in this article but the same official is quoted as saying: > Sergey Lazarev, president of the Moscow Chess Federation, told Russian state media outlet TASS the boy did not give the robot enough time to respond to his move, then the robot grabbed him when he reached for one of the pieces. This makes sense once you understand the Russian culture around victim blame and blame shifting. It’s worse than in America. Not sure why the BBC chose not to spotlight the piss poor handling of this from start to finish. Highly likely someone wanted some photo op of Russian excellence consequences be damned and then when things turned out poorly “it’s the 7yold’s fault for having an accident with an industrial system we told him was safe”.
- donatj 4y agoObnoxiously watermarked video of the incident for the curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l295j5IifeE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l295j5IifeE
- OnionBlender 4y agoThanks. I hate how every article I read had neither a picture or video of the robot.
- srvmshr 4y agoOh ! This is terrible. The poor kid will be scared of robots, if not chess for a long time. Hope he recovers well.
- nix23 4y agoOr he start's making battle robot's (breaking the fingers of school bullies).
- shsbdncudx 4y agoNah, this kid will end up leading the resistance
- rwoerz 4y agoIs that the AI singularity when robots learn to be bad losers?
- qubex 4y agoKid’s name was John Connor?
- PeterStuer 4y agoIt's unclear whether the break was from he robot's pinch or from the people trying to pull the finger free.
- DoingIsLearning 4y agoEither way shouldn't matter, any industrial robot (which this is by the size of the motor joints) should be working inside a cage or only interacting with humans if you have a massive amount of 'virtual fixtures' and torque safeguards in place. Doesn't matter whichever way we paint this, either the organizers or the designers were reckless. In the end it was fortunate that only a finger was broken.
- ralferoo 4y agoClassic understatement: "This is of course bad."
