Ask HN: How do copy my consciousness onto the digital version?
Is this even possible already?
Can I copy my consciousness onto a Raspberry Pi and talk to myself?
- eternityforest 4y agoI'll leave the question of whether mind uploading is possible to philosophers(We don't know what consciousness is, so I don't know how we could upload it, even if we could copy brains perfectly). What we can do is train machine learning text models to sound like a person, or even like a fictional character(With human-written training data) People have done thar before, but not on a RasPi, at least not without acceleration hardware.
- modinfo 4y agoI meant to create a finished model simply from our brain without costly and time-consuming training. You just plug in something to your brain, upload and you have a finished model afterwards.
- beardyw 4y agoSadly understanding of how the human brain works is more limited than you might imagine. That is mainly because the brain offers no easy way to see what is going on inside. AI uses techniques which might imitate what the brain does, but no one is really sure.
- jstx1 4y ago> Is this even possible already? No.
- bckr 4y agoCorrect answer. We don't even know what makes you conscious, or gives you memories or will. The brain is basically a magic blob to us at this point. Maybe in 100 years?
- inphovore 4y agoConsciousness is the inflection upon the substrate of existence. It is the universe perceiving and interacting with itself through the embodiment of living things. It is the atoms in our brain which are experiencing consciousness, animated by our electro-chemical jelly bag brains. Consciousness is not intelligence. Awareness is only the tip of the consciousness iceberg (as we remain the stuff “of consciousness” when asleep or in a coma.) Quantum computing is the closest to consciousness, only the qubit is an irrelevant dead end (consciousness is analog and the quantum dynamic works like a sieve.) Yes consciousness may be “transferred” as it distributes itself over billions of neurons (giving the illusion of a subjective singularity), yet must have a ground (any stable physical base) which contains enough information to even identify itself (your memories and sense of identity are stored in your physical brain and are not technically part of your consciousness.) It is more likely/possible to entangle your consciousness with another person and have a conversation with yourself. Consciousness is more like electricity (potential of existential being) that may be shared than an artifact with its own identity.
