NASA Selects Falcon Heavy to Launch Roman Space Telescope
- hunglee2 4y agowhat an incredible addition Space X is the USA space programme. NASA was locked into a single main supplier (Boeing) prior to Elon Musk deciding to simply get involved. He's changed the payload economics with reusable rocketry and re-injected competition into what was a moribund monopoly. It's not easy to eulogise Musk these days but when the history of space flight is written, his contribution will be worth more than a chapter
- _8j50 4y agoAnother elon-worship. Good for you. It was all one billionaire genius. I hope that chapter is fair in including everything else as well. From me: screw elon but good job to all the engineers and scientists that worked under him (unfortunately some were terminated for speaking out). People did the same thing with Steve Jobs despite how he treated his workers. The tradition of looking the other way when the rich and powerful are enabling progress lives on. Morality is but a burden that slows down progress? (Obvious sarcasm) /s
- foxyv 4y agoPeople are complicated. They will do great things that change the world for the better one day, and the next day do horrible things that should be condemned. The horrible things do not make the good things any less good. The good things do not make the horrible things any less horrible. I think the people who celebrate the accomplishments of Elon Musk and SpaceX are well founded. I also think the people who decry his actions in other places are completely justified. In the end I think he should be judged for ALL of his actions, and not just the ones we choose to accept.
- ryzvonusef 4y agohow about we don't turn HN into reddit or twitter and try to be a bit more rational when discussing Elon Musk? Elon Musk took the risks, educated risks in his own mind, and he deserves to be rewarded for them when those risks paid off and improved the whole field as a result... as much as he deserved to derided when those risks fail to pay off also. To use his talented scientist and engineers or money or whatever, as an excuse is senseless, since the incumbents and contemporaries, all had far more talented personnel and money, but could not achieve what he did simply because they were risk averse, and the whole industry suffered as a result. ---- one of the biggest problems is that we tried to net-off all the good and bad deeds of a person and try to find the balancing amount, and judge a person based on that, like as if people were a book of accounts and not a living breathing complicated organism. The problem is, people and their legacies are not, as much as religious texts would lead us to believe, the sum of all our accomplishments. You needs to judge each action on its own merits; you can't put them on a weighing scale and put them in a ranking, and what not. Elon Musk exists, and his accomplishments exists and you can't poo-poo them just because you don't like them. Separately and concurrently, his sins also exist, and you can't eh-eh them just because you like him.
- _8j50 4y agoI respectfully disagree, a person wilfully harming and exploiting others should not be praised regardless of their accomplishments. However, if he is humble enough to admit his mistakes and make amends it should not be held against him in perpetuity. The thing that pisses me off about Elon is that he craves attention and you give it to him despite what he does. It is his license to do as he pleases because people are supporting him and others will be empowered to follow in his footsteps. Real people will be harmed as a result and you share responsibility for supporting his behavior and he shows absolutley no remorse. Trump is the same, they ignored all the shit he did because of what he acheived for his supporters. Shame on all of you and I will say this everytime I see elon worship. I don't care if you cure cancer and invent intergalactic space travel, you are still a human being and especially as a public figure you do not get away with promoting behavior that harms other people, especially if they are vulnerable or under you -- that is what gets to be remembered about you and your accomplishments are but a footnote, not the other way around. We cannot keep refusing to learn from the past like this. The rich and powerful harm and exploit without consequences because of the people tolerate their behavior.
- google234123 4y agoI don’t think Elon memeing/trolling is really such a big deal. What’s the specific things that he has promoted that offended you so much?
- _8j50 4y agoOff the top of my head: anti-vaxx, sleeping with step daughter he raised since she was 4 , sleeping with and knocking up people who work under him (still do), did not take responsibility for the race issues at the fremont location just paid off the fine and it kept hapenning againand again to the point the state is suing him, a lot of pro-trump b.s. , fired diversity staff for "woke mind virus", fired spacex people who spoke up asking him to stop with all the public scandals. he is a public figure, like it or not a trend setter. I guess he himself was emboldened only after trump did the same thing and he too was without remorse, who is following elon? What does he need to do? Grope women and make fun of disabled people like trump (oops, people still supported trump and looked the other way). This shit needs to stop.
