I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have studied Greek and Latin roots in Year 12 English class.
Time and again I have struck new words that I can immediately know their meaning of because they are derived from those Latin and Greek roots. Know 20 roots, and you can understand hundreds of new words.
Fun fact: there are two words using British and American spelling that are supposed to be the same word: Paedophile and Pedophile.
Unfortunately, Pedophile really means "foot lover" using British spelling. From the Greek roots: "paed" = "child" (paediatrics, paedophile), "ped" = "foot", (pedometer, pedal, pedestrian).
There doesn't appear to be a possible 'foot lover' when using American spelling. <grin>
