It's very driveable, traffic is fine and parking is easy. Neighborhoods like downtown Mtn View and downtown Sunnyvale (where I live) are very walkable but you don't have to walk. Public transport is not the way to go in the valley, but if you do use it it's much safer than public transport in SF.
