While "Changing the world" and "Making the world a better place" are core goals of those of us working with technology, it feels as if these phrases have been abused to the point where everyone just rolls their eyes when they hear them.
Even HBO's Silicon Valley series drew attention to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8C5sjjhsso https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8C5sjjhsso
- iasay 4y agoThere’s a lot of changing the world. Less than 10% makes it a better place.
- celdon25 4y agoI don't remember "changing the world" being mocked in HBO's Silicon Valley and not seeing a mention of the "Making the world a better place" in the OP?
- gojomo 4y agoWhen someone says in a startup/recruiting/motivational context that they aim to "change the world", there's an implied "for the better". That makes the OP's appeal to "change the world [for the better]" highly similar to the "make the world a better place" phrasing highlighted in the linked 'Silicon Valley' spoofs.
- sebastianconcpt 4y agoNote it is a cliche for ideologues and revolutionaries too. Depend on who listens it can mean "disrupt a market" or "being subversive".
