When you say moderate without AI are you suggesting human moderation? This is not really a good solution to this problem either. Paying people to traumatize themselves by watching video after video or reading tweet after tweet of the worst content society has to offer is dehumanizing.
- mordae 4y agoWith good moderation it won't spiral out of control that much.
- carbadtraingood 4y agoWhat? Even with the best moderation, humans will periodically brigade a site with awful content because they think it's funny to do so.
- troymc 4y agoAFAIK, most of the moderation on Reddit is done by unpaid humans, not AI. Reddit isn't perfect, of course, but their approach does scale.
- kkklloufffr 4y agoModerators on Reddit are extremely petty and vindictive and I have hypothesized for a long time that this is because they are not paid with money.
- vintermann 4y agoYes 1. If they didn't get something out of it, they wouldn't be doing it. 2. They don't get money out of it. 3. So...
- galleywest200 4y agoAs someone who helps moderate a very large subreddit I can assure you we write our own bots to help. A lot of stuff is manually reviewed "in queue" and we review any complains in modmail manually. But there are too many comment for us unpaid internet janitors to not use our own robots. Also since we are not paid our caring levels are lower, thus heavy use of regex and automation.
- Kiro 4y agoMost moderation on Reddit is done by automated bots. Without those it wouldn't scale so humans are not enough.
- serf 4y ago>reading tweet after tweet of the worst content society has to offer is dehumanizing. so is being a human being told that you're in the wrong by a robot that obviously has the wrong idea about the situation, but one side is paid to do it and is offered therapy and counseling. aside : spare the human by using an AI for the first part; appeals need to be handled by humans. If the issue is the exposure to hatemail then all I can say is that humans in various industries have been able to cope with reading hatemail without major incident for some time now, as unpleasant as it may be. Another aside : all employment is de-humanizing to some degree; the contract between worker and company is literally "let me pay you for the finite time you have on this earth so we can increase our financial bottom line." -- regardless of the mission statement it is rarely a motivation any more deep than that. Let's at least keep the dehumanizing behavior focused on the people who are paid to experience it.
- jwolfe 4y agoThe issue is not exposure to hatemail. The issue is exposure to child pornography and videos of people literally dying, all day every day. These are not comparable to the pain of being banned, and therapy is nowhere near sufficient. https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/25/18229714/cognizant-facebook-content-moderator-interviews-trauma-working-conditions-arizona https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/25/18229714/cognizant-facebo...
