My grandpa built himself a turn-by-turn navigation system back in the early nineties. It consisted of a strip of paper rolled onto a wooden cylinder. He would write the instructions down on the strip of paper at home. And later, on the road, all he has to do was advance the strip one notch after each instruction.
I believe he also built this thing in order to avoid discussions with my grandma. (There’s a reason Google Maps has this super friendly female voice. Much better than an agitated spouse hollering at you, haha)

- jskrablin 4y agoThis is how rally roadbook works. Turn by turn or navigation points with noted distance since the start (and some extra data like possible dangers or extra navi points) printed onto a (usually quite long) roll of paper that's then forwarded using roadbook reader. Add a reasonably well calibrated tripmaster and you're all set.
