The author's complaints could equally be applied to naming branches, but I suspect he would find it difficult to work if all of our branches were named 'a', 'bbbbb' 'seroiuwegonw' and the like. Without messages, commits are only identifiable by arbitrary and meaningless strings of letters and digits. This would make git bisect needlessly more difficult, if nothing else.
