I work at a large software company that has, for decades, operated without any commit messages whatsoever. When you get the days latest code in your workspace, you know what files are changed, but not why (and often not who). Has our company imploded? No. But you absolutely feel this lack of information whenever you wonder "hmm, why is this line of code the way it is". As we've transitioned to git, we don't have a universal culture of writing commit messages, and I wish we did.
