China’s Top Chipmaker Achieves Breakthrough Despite US Curbs
- trasz 4y agoChina was pretty much forced to do it by American embargo couple of years ago. EDIT: Just realized: this is China, so they have a metric ton of money available for investment. They can build many, many fabs relatively quickly and flood the market several years from now.
- simonblack 4y agoAbsolutely. I've been saying for years that banning the export of semiconductors to China was 'short-term thinking'. It came down to the old managerial dilemma: Do we 'buy-built' because it's quicker, cheaper and easier, but leaves us at the mercy of the manufacturers? Or do we 'build our own' which is slower, more expensive and more difficult but we are our own masters and are then able to out-compete our current suppliers? China was perfectly happy when they could get the billions of 'buy-built' semiconductors from the States and spend several hundred billion dollars a year doing so. That also helped with the balance of payments problem in US-China trade. Being forced now to throw hundreds of billions of dollars of R & D at the problem, China is well on the way to destroying the US semiconductor industry. The same way as happened to the loss of the US steel, textiles, building materials, paper, electronics, vehicles, machine tools, etc, etc, etc industries. It's called shooting yourself in both feet and your head and smiling while you are dying. Absolutely dumb.
