First mistake in my eyes is hiring from an Internet forum instead of a professional service. Granted, I don’t have a personal website and nor have I hired a website freelancer. So, heap on the salt. Sorry that you went through all this. I can tell how frustrating it was and it doesn’t feel good to be scammed.
