China’s SMIC Achieves Breakthrough Despite US Curbs
- zolosa 4y agoSMIC is shipping Bitcoin-mining semiconductors using 7-nanometer technology. But without EUV how is it possible?
- cromwellian 4y ago7nm doesn’t require EUV, 5nm does. You can do 7nm with DUV.

- simonblack 4y agoI've warned several times that banning sales to China would lead to the rapid development of the Chinese semiconductor industry that would take over all such manufacturing in short order, leading to the US and other semiconductor manufacturers lying in the dust. Seems I'm saying "Told you so." even earlier than I had imagined.
- cromwellian 4y agoFinally producing 4 yr old tech with unknown yields and costs is not exactly leaving anyone in the dust. If they did achieve this by IP theft then they’ll face sanctions as well so whether they ship 7nm or not won’t matter if Western countries aren’t allowed to buy them. Ask Huawei if you think import bans don’t work.
- simonblack 4y agoFinally producing 4 yr old tech ... not exactly leaving anyone in the dust. 6-12 months ago, the Chinese were estimated to be about 7-10 years behind in semiconductors. In that short time they've caught up roughly about 5 years. Thinking they can't catch up completely, if not actually pulling out in front is pure hubris. That's what killed most of the US's industries that are now not able at all to compete with the Chinese ones.
