And what's the situation in Linux?
I use Netflix via Chrome on Linux.
As such I don't watch too many movies. Was I paying all that money for nothing?
While on the subject — I use Chrome exclusively for Netflix. My privacy settings on Firefox — my default browser — doesn't work well with Netflix, and so I installed Chrome for the sole purpose of using Netflix.
Video quality always seemed worse than on my smartphone.
- OmarAssadi 4y agoProper Chrome Chrome on Linux also has Widevine L3, so the same bad situation as Chrome on Windows and macOS. And yes, if you’re not also using Netflix a ton on your TV or something, you were likely overpaying :( DRM sucks.
- Mindwipe 4y agoLinux will never get better than 720p, and maybe even 480 in some circumstances as it's unlikely your machine can pass up a signed HDCP chain of trust. (Somebody will point out that HDCP support was added to the Linux Kernel here, but it was added for the use of the kernel on closed hardware where you can have a hardware root of trust and signed drivers, not a general purpose Linux machine.)
