The practice of letter writing has decreased in volume to the extent that it is not unlikely that, if the trend continues, postal services will be discontinued at some point in the future. Perhaps business letters, official letters and ads will keep the services afloat, but even if many people can barely hand-write a letter anymore.
I lament this development as I enjoyed writing letters to friends up to the late
1990s.
It is true that a lot of media are very volatile; the Web is rapidly changing and the only protection from loss is archive.org (make sure to submit your blog there if you care about its content's online preservation). As has been pointed out by others before, future historians will not have an easy time researching our days due to the lack of physical information artifacts (letters, diaries).
