It won't pass Senate though?
- AnimalMuppet 4y agoIt might. But here's the thing: What Congress can pass, Congress can un-pass in 2024. That is, all these "Oh, the SC decided something we don't like, let's pass a bill to fix it" responses seem to me to be a bit flimsy.
- detaro 4y agoif a "simple" law is already at "might not pass" anything stronger is not really realistic, is it? (i.e. constitutional amendment)
- megaman821 4y agoPassing a bill is exactly what the Supreme Court is asking them to do. It may not be perfect, but the Democrats should take what they can get. Having a law on the books will make any SC ruling against gay marriage harder to justify. Also, there might be just enough Republican support for this to squeak by just to prove overturning Roe wasn't some slippery slope to overturning gay marriage, contraception, and inter-racial marriage.
- treeman79 4y agoIs marriage outlined in constitution? State issue then. Unless it falls under interstate commerce clause like everything is…
- jfengel 4y agoYeah, it's in the Constitution: Article IV, Section 1: Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. At the very least other states must acknowledge marriages (public act and/or record) from other states, even if that state wouldn't permit it.
- prirun 4y agoI think Clarence specifically omitted inter-racial marriage from his list of future targets for obvious reasons: his wife Ginni is white. "It's okay for me, but not for thee"
